Systematic Review of Sensory Stimulation Programs in the Rehabilitation of Acquired Brain Injury

Abstract. Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) can lead to sensory deficits and compromise functionality. However, most studies have been focused on motor stimulation in stroke traumatic brain injury (TBI). Sensory mild/moderate TBI has received reduced interest. The main objective of this review is know the methodological characteristics effects programs ABI. Studies with purpose testing efficacy those were identified through a literature search, following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Cochrane Collaboration Guidelines. Twenty-three included review. results show that started within 12 months after there no consensus regarding frequency, duration number sessions, intervention, instruments used assess outcomes. Most involved unisensory stimulation, vision was predominant target. methods compensation somatosensory discrimination training. pre- post-intervention assessment, few comprising follow-up assessment. Regarding revised, interventions positive outcomes ABI are: compensation, cognitive training, vestibular proprioceptive muscle vibration, sustained attention training olfactory stimulation. Available findings suggest immediate long-term improvements functioning. This provides useful information improve rehabilitation design future investigation.
